Warm weekend in London

Typically, London's summer temperatures average at 73 degrees. Well, today we surpassed that (it is still in the mid-70s at 10:00pm) and tomorrow the forecast is calling for upper 80s.  Today was sunny and warm and all of London was outside soaking up the weather.  The one downside to warm weather in London is that not many locations have air conditioning... and it can be quite stuffy and very uncomfortable on the tube when the temperature gets high.

This weekend, many of the students took the opportunity to do some traveling. One group headed north to Scotland. Another group headed south to Dover. And the rest stayed here to explore London.

Next week, the students take over the blog. I will post their responses to their Tourist With a Purpose activities. ENG 331 is taken by so many different majors and in order to meet the needs/interests of the students, I created the Tourist With a Purpose program. The Tourist With a Purpose program allows students to take ownership of their experiences and really customize their study abroad experience. Students select 3 activities each week that are related to their field, future career plans, or their hobbies/interests. They write about what they did/saw/learned and I share their write ups on this public blog.  Since ENG 331 is a writing intensive class, these blog postings are part of their assignment. They also serve as a journal to chronicle their activities. And, the Tourist With a Purpose program encourages students to participate in meaningful activities throughout their time in London (and while traveling).

Everything we do in ENG 331--whether it is the study abroad version, the classroom version, or the online version--is focused on students' future career paths. We want our students to take the theories and guidelines for good professional communication with them into their future jobs and careers. The Tourist With a Purpose program encourages students to see connections between what they are seeing in London with their future career.
