Oftentimes, the stress surrounding
academics and an engineering degree can pile up. Since high school, one of my
greatest stress-relief mechanisms has been to explore the outdoors. Whether it
is weeklong backpacking adventures in the North Carolina Mountains or a day
spent exploring Umstead State Park in Raleigh, hiking has really been able to
provide me with an escape when tough classes and exam week rolls around. The freedom
and fresh air that the outdoors bring is incomparable, and often helps me clear
my head and think more coherently when it comes time to focus on school once
again.
This summer has been no different, with several summer classes and a
degree change adding to the stress of everyday life. Last Saturday, while in
Edinburgh, I woke up early for a morning summit of Arthur’s Peak, the main peak
of the volcanic hills in Holyrood Park. I was once again able to clear my head
and contemplate the wonderful experience that I have had so far this summer. So
far, this opportunity for quiet thought was of the best parts of my time
abroad. Hiking Arthurs Seat gave me the chance to relax, reflect, and prepare
for the last two weeks of my adventure in London. Not to mention, I got some
great photos in the process. Considering the rather easy hike to the summit,
only about 830 feet above sea level, the views were especially remarkable.
Though I have hiked volcanoes in Hawaii and numerous other mountains before,
this time was quite different. The beautiful Old Town skyline sat in the
distance and there was nothing but sun in the sky. The city of Edinburgh is a
wonderful place that I hope to visit again one, and this new perspective really
helped put things in focus and let me take in the beauty that the Scottish
countryside has to offer.
